Do you have diabetes?
Have you ever had a heart attack?
Are you age 50 or older?
If you answered “yes” to these three questions, you may be eligible to take part in a National Institutes of Health funded study of intravenous (IV) chelation therapy and oral vitamins for people with diabetes and heart disease.
What is TACT2?
TACT2 is a clinical trial to determine whether intravenous (IV) Na2EDTA chelation therapy with oral (by mouth) multivitamins will reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (such as stroke and heart attack) in patients who have already had a heart attack and who also have type 2 diabetes.
Why is TACT2 important?
If TACT2 finds the same results as TACT1, EDTA chelation therapy may become a novel guideline-supported therapeutic option for patients with coronary artery disease who are already on evidence-based medical therapy.

What is chelation therapy?
Chelation therapy is a research medicine given through an IV. Some scientists believe that chelation therapy may help treat heart disease by removing toxins from the blood. However, this has not been proven. This study will find out if chelation works in treating heart disease in patients with diabetes.
What will the study involve?
If you join the study, you will be assigned to receive either IV treatment OR IV placebo (inactive treatment). The IV is administered weekly for approximately 40 weeks. Each IV session last approximately three to four hours. In addition, you will take either high-dose oral vitamin and mineral supplements or identical placebo pills. All participants will receive low-dose vitamin and mineral supplements during the time they are receiving IV treatment. You will continue to take your standard diabetes and heart disease medications. The expected duration of the study is approximately 5 years.
What are the costs?
Study-related treatments will be provided at no cost. Other medical costs remain your responsibility.
